Diane Buckingham, M.D.PA By : Herron, Jo Ann A NAACP Brief description: Dr Buckingham received the prestigious honor of being featured in the national Black Enterprise magazine, July 2008 edition, page 70, volume 38, Issue 12 for “AMERICAN’S LEADING BLACK DOCTORS. The July 2008 issue of Black Enterprise listed the top African-American psychiatrists and the Greater Kansas City Medical Society’s own, U. Diane Buckingham, MD, was listed among the “Ten” Psychiatrist in the United States. Dr Buckingham, a graduate of the University Of Kansas School Of Medicine, is currently in practice in Overland Park, Kansas. Honored along with other notable psychiatrists such as Dr. Alvin F. Poussaint of Harvard Medical School consultant for the “Cosby Show” Dr. Buckingham recognition was unique in that she was the only psychiatrist in private practice to receive the honor. Dr Buckingham spends a great deal of time working with children, their caregivers and schools to empower all parties involved with the diagnosis of ADHD, differentiate between what behaviors are and are not driven by this diagnosis and the understanding of psychopharmacology in the treatment of ADHD. Dr. Buckingham is the Chair of the Psychiatry Section of the National Medical Association, which is the largest physician organization in the country addressing health disparities in African Americans, and other people of color. In June 2008, Dr. Buckingham was awarded a unrestricted educational grant, which she used to support academic and web presentations, of the National Medical Association (NMA) the largest physician organization in the county addressing health disparities in African American , of which she is currently chair of the Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences section. The symposium, entitled “The Black Family, was part of the National Medical Association National Conference and took place July 26 – 31. Joining with Dr. Buckingham as hosts were Dr. Camille Cosby (wife of Bill Cosby) and Dr. David Satcher, 16th Surgeon General of the United States with standing room audience of over 250 health professional, educators, and others The symposium presented strategies and models for the psychiatric management of children, adolescents and adults, together with recommendations leading to the elimination of health disparities that affect African American and other populations of color. Dr. Buckingham says, “Understanding effective interventions for patients and assuring equal access to the best available treatment are critical to realizing the promise of truly personalized medicine for psychiatric treatment.” Dr. Buckingham is an expert in providing guidance in the mental health care of African Americans and biracial children, helping to eliminate barriers to proper treatment. In addition to serving on the National Professional Advisory Board of CHADD, she travels the country giving speeches to educate parents, teachers and health providers regarding the culturally correct assessments tools and treatment options for children of color with not only ADHD, but other behavioral and mental health diagnosis. Dr. Buckingham is also the recipient of numerous awards, including the recognition as of the 20 top woman psychiatrists M.D. “Who Made a Difference: the interactive exhibits the Changing the Face of Medicine”. Which is displayed in 61 libraries across the United States between August 2005- November 2010. Dr Buckingham is an active member in the Johnson County NAACP and the branch acknowledges her as an “Outstanding African American Leader” in our bi-state area of Kansas and Missouri Community.
