After graduating from Wyandotte High School playing trumpet in the music program, I attended Graceland College for two years before transferring to Northwestern University in Wilmette, IL. I graduated from Northwestern in Music Education and accepted a teaching position at Hobart Middle School, Hobart, IN. In the early 1960s I moved to Deerfield, IL to become their first band instructor, Music Dept. Chairman, and theory teacher. I continued to play trumpet in the Northshore Community Band and taught private trumpet lessons.
I taught at the high school for over 25 years and retired when my last child graduated in the 1980s. During my tenure, the high school band played for President Ronald Reagan, was the first high school band to play at the Illinois Governor's inaugural ceremony. We also had a strong band booster program which allowed us to perform at different National sites including Walt Disney World and the Mummer's parade in Philadelphia. When not traveling to out-of-state concerts, we participated in numerous band contest . Many Deerfield High School students from the music program became music educators, professional musicians, and composers/arrangers.
